Mercedes V8

Wow , what happens when you rebuild a cylinder head and don't check the valve guide clearance. Rev the engine hard and if the valve seizes for a moment , well there we have it.

This Mercedes rolled into the workshop blowing blue + white smoke. There was a definite miss fire in the engine. After identifying the troubled cylinder and removing it we found the following.

A new exchange head was fitted and all the valve clearances set and re-checked. But still there was a miss-fire and blue + white smoke.

So off came the head again and after inspecting the piston even closer we found a hole had been punched right through it by the broken valve. Now the friendly customer had to agree to fitting a new piston assembly!

Take a look at the photo's below and see how the valve has punched a hole right through the piston.

Replace one piston assembly , one cylinder head , and there we have a perfectly healthy Mercedes V8.

Who do we blame? Bad fuel? Poor valve guide clearance? Over revving the engine? Maybe just old Murphy!
