Takeuchi Track Drive Motor Replacement.

 Takeuchi TR03 excavator now only tracks in a circle.

No track drive on the left hand side.

No visible oil leaking from the track drive motor.

a quick connect of the pressure gauge and all is confirmed - Track Drive motor Down.



Right at the end of this post are two interesting video's detailing Final Drives and Motors.


And so we begin on our adventure.

Check the oil!

You saw right Buddy - not a drop after ten minutes.



After taking off the track and removing the final drive motor we get it into the shed.

Extract the final drive cover by patiently fishing out the lock wire through a tiny hole 
drilled in the cover.
Cover off - not looking good!

The first set of planetary gears are badly worn - very sharp edges - 
seems a bearing has collapsed as well.


Second set of planetary gears - not looking good here either.
There is a muddy , greasy , paste all over , it's not grease and smells of hydraulic oil.

Not only has the final drive seal failed - letting out all the good transmission oil -
The pump drive motor has also failed bleeding or leaking into the final drive.
With all the work in the mud - the final drive seal allowed free entrance to all the finer contaminants..
And so we have our special mixture of outstanding grinding paste.
Self destruct darling.


Out of curiosity we stripped the drive down to examine the damage.
Notice how the splines have worn away and the condition of the drive gear.

ASV Rc 30 Posi Track - track drive motor failure.

PROBLEM:  Left-hand side track drive motor suddenly stopped working. Oil leaking from the drive motor seal.

After removing the front idler wheel and the track we started to strip down the drive motor.


To access the drive support bearing punch a hole through the soft plate and remove it.

This is the soft plate on the left hand side of the machine.


After the plate was removed we discovered that the housing we full of mud.

Compacted with soil that had worked its way through the front of the bearing housing and compacted itself against the soft plate we have just removed.

 Clearing away the mud to locate the bearing and cir-clip that keeps the bearing in place.

Another angle of the mud, this time on the right hand side track drive motor.

This time we removed the bearing support bracket and now need to remove the bearing housing.

This side is worse, the bearing cage and the ball bearings are ready to fall out.

Cleaning the mud to locate the cir-clip.

Rotten housing removed, take a close look at the axle shaft!

The bearing must have seized and the inner housing must have chewed the shaft away.

And so, a heap of parts and two seal kits later and we are back on the road again.
Below are the seals that needed replacement and exposed a heap of other problems.

YANMAR Vio 40 TRACK DRIVE MOTOR REBUILD.


YANMAR VIO 40 excavator has bad oil leak on the track drive motor.
Closer inspection revealed that the seal between the drive hub and the mounting flange had given way. 

A new seal kit was located complete with all the o rings and the large steel compression seals.


We start stripping the drive unit and remove the old worn compression seal with it's steel slip ring.


Notice the steel slip ring and the rubber o ring that seals and provides the constant pressure on the seal.


The new slip ring is at the bottom, the old one is on the top one.
Can you spot the contamination wear marks on the old slip ring?
Notice the machine ground finish to the new component.


The contamination between the drive unit and the drive hub slowly wears away the sealing face on the slip seal.
This drive hub was filled with hydraulic oil though, a sure sign that the motor drive seal had popped.
This caused the hydraulic oil to leak into the drive unit and pressurise it.
The leak seen below was most probably caused by over pressure.


in the bottom left corner is the drive motor seal that caused the leak into the drive unit.
Made from special nitrate this seal is best replaced with the genuine item, the after market parts do not last!

All assembled and bench tested, the tracks replaced and away we go.
This repair requires a fair amount for technical skill, mostly a generous portion of patience , fitting the slip seal.
