"You Will Never Walk Alone"

John Deere 2305 HST P.T.O. Drive Gear Failure.

This smart John Deere 2305 tractor arrived in great running condition.
Just one small problem.
There was no pto engagement..
On closer inspection we found that there were some gears in the tool box on th efender.
wonder where they go ?

The gears we found in the tool box.

And so the work begins, off with the pto drive and the rear transmission covers.

 Spot the problem?
Just above the center of the picture you will spot part of the transmission casing is broken away.
One almost wonders why there is such little support for a bearing that carries such a big load!
Surely one would beef up the housing.

Rear transmission cover with the output shaft still in place, kept there to prevent oil loss and contamination from taking place.

On closer inspection the gears tell a story.

Notice the teeth are worn away on the smaller gear set, well it turns out this john Deere has no PTO protection.

Yep - NO warranty either , a sticker on the rear fender warns that the PTO must be operated with a safety clutch in the drive line,
Pictured below is one of many types one can fit.

A grass slasher fitted with a PTO slip clutch.

Lesson to remember - Always check that the machine is being operated to the manufacturers specification.
Always include all the required safety requirements that is suggested.

Turns out that machine was used to cut grass with a slasher. One day the operator got distracted and mowed a large mound of dirt.
The blades could no longer turn and the PTO bearing in the transmission rebelled, forcing the housing to protest and finally both parts lay down and died.

The tractor ran well for many years after this failure, towing a helicopter in and our of a shed on the Great Ocean Road.
